Firewood for home heating seems like a simple choice, but in practice, small mistakes in sorting, humidity and storage quickly affect heat output. The result is higher fuel costs, more soot in the boiler and an unpleasant smell in the room.

1) Buying firewood with high humidity
One of the most common mistakes is buying “fresh” or insufficiently dried wood. Wet wood spends part of its energy on evaporating water, so there is less heat in the room, and more smoke and condensation. Focus on well-dried firewood: it burns more evenly, reaches a stable flame faster and clogs the firebox less.

2) Ignoring the type of wood and its properties
Different types of wood have different densities, burning rates and calorific values. For example, some types of wood burn longer and “hotter”, while others burn faster and require more frequent tossing. The mistake is to take what is “the cheapest looking” without understanding how it will work in your furnace or boiler.

3) Incorrect size of logs
Too long or thick logs may not fit under the combustion chamber, and too small ones may burn out too quickly. This creates an inconvenient operating mode: either you have to throw wood often, or the flame turns out to be unstable. Before buying, check the dimensions that are most “comfortable” for your boiler or stove.

Sometimes firewood looks acceptable, but inside it has damage: rot, mold, rotten areas or delamination. Such logs burn worse, create more debris and can increase unwanted odors. If possible, inspect the end and condition of the wood, and also pay attention to foreign inclusions.

5) Neglecting storage rules
Even high-quality wood can “gain” moisture over time. A mistake is to store firewood without a canopy, without ventilation, or directly on the ground. To maintain heat and stable combustion, let the wood air out and protect it from precipitation.

6) Choosing without considering your equipment
Different heating systems “love” fuel differently. What is good for one stove can cause problems in another: from excessive tarring to faster overgrowth of channels. A mistake is to buy firewood “universally” without checking the recommendations of the boiler or stove manufacturer.

7) Confusion with “dry firewood” and expectations from heat
A marking like “dry” does not always mean real readiness for efficient combustion. If the seller cannot explain the origin and seasonality of the harvest or there are no at least basic signs of drying, the risk of receiving firewood with increased humidity increases. It is better to rely on clear characteristics and honest information.

Make sure that the wood is really dried (less “wateriness”, better burning).
Choose the type of wood for your regime: burning time and calorific value are important.
Check the size of the logs for compliance with the combustion chamber.
