If possible, choose an area that gets plenty of sun and has prevailing winds; these factors boost evaporation and airflow. Keep the stack close enough for convenience, but not pressed against fences, buildings, or dense vegetation where airflow can stall. Use airflow-focused base and spacingElevate the bottom layer by using rails, pallets (untreated), or small supports so air can circulate under the wood. Avoid setting logs directly on bare soil, which can trap moisture and encourage rot. Periodically check for areas that look darker or remain damp longer—these often indicate poor airflow, tight packing, or too much water exposure. Rearranging only problem sections can be faster than rebuilding the entire stack. Finally, remember that moisture content is what determines burn quality. Even with good stacking, thicker, denser, or recently cut wood will take longer to dry. If you want faster results, start with split logs (which have more surface area) and stack them as soon as possible after cutting.
